  • Naval Architect / Marine Engineer

CAREER DESCRIPTION

JMS Naval Architects is recruiting experienced maritime professionals as well as recent graduates who demonstrate a commitment to learn, collaborate and innovate in the marine industry.  Successful candidates will be responsible for providing naval architecture and marine engineering support for commercial vessels such as tugs, research vessels, tank barges, crane barges, heavy lift vessels, dry docks, passenger vessels, and work boats. Typical tasks include:

  • Providing engineering consultation and developing feasibility studies
  • Conducting intact and damaged stability analysis, deadweight surveys and inclining tests
  • Designing marine engineering systems
  • Conducting structural assessments using first principles methods and finite element analysis
  • Conducting ship checks/surveys
  • Conducting damage assessments and developing repair plans
  • Providing shipyard engineering support and developing shipyard work specifications
  • Conducting rule analyses using classification society standards and/or USCG regulations
  • Utilizing HECSALV, AutoCAD, Rhino, Solidworks and FEA software

JMS Naval Architects is a specialty maritime engineering firm providing naval architecture, marine engineering, marine surveying, and marine casualty response services to assist ship owners in the management of their fleet. With a unique combination of high-end analytical engineering expertise and practical deck plate experience, JMS employees develop innovative and cost-effective solutions to complex problems. The work environment offers exposure to a wide variety of projects and encourages creativity.

The position requires an engineering degree in the marine field and a strong passion for anything that floats.  Some travel and fieldwork is required and candidates must have the ability and desire to climb around ships from the bilges to the mast. Some project assignments may require a valid driver’s license, current passport, and/or TWIC card. Applicants must have unrestricted authorization to work in the United States.

Candidates should have familiarity with classification society standards, USCG regulations, and vessel design principles. They must be able to efficiently organize and manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously. Excellent communications and computer skills are required. In addition, any of the following qualifications are highly desirable:

  • Shipyard experience
  • Shipboard experience with deck or engineering license
  • Graduate degree or P.E. license
  • Marine surveying experience
