JMS Provides Naval Architecture Support for R/V TIOGA
JMS Naval Architects provided naval architecture and marine engineering support to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution [WHOI] for a significant mid-life refit and modernization project of the R/V TIOGA, a 60-foot aluminum coastal research vessel. JMS provided the engineering, design and technical specifications to enhance the platform’s scientific capabilities and operational efficiency.
The modifications included:
Enhanced Maneuverability: Engineered the installation of a new tunnel bow thruster to improve control and station-keeping during sensitive instrument deployments.
Portable knuckle-boom crane installation for improved load handling capability: Performed finite element analysis of the deck and designed structural modifications to accommodate the crane loads.
Hydraulic System Overhaul: Modified the existing hydraulic system to install new PTO kits and load-sensing pumps to support the new bow thruster and a portable deck crane.
Ventilation Optimization: Relocated the engine room ventilation trunks away from the working deck to the exhaust stacks, significantly increasing usable deck space for scientific equipment and operations.
Wheelhouse Modernization: Executed a total redesign of the wheelhouse, including new control console and workstation arrangements.
Stability Analysis: Conducted a post-modification survey along with stability analysis for the procurement of a new USCG Stability Letter.
