JMS has a long history of supporting the NSF in the management of the Academic Research Fleet [ARF]. JMS has conducted hundreds of research vessel inspections since 1997 to ensure that vessels in the ARF are maintained in a high degree of operational readiness and able to meet current and emerging oceanographic research objectives. Inspections have been conducted across the U.S. as well as New Zealand, Chile, South Africa, Bermuda and Mauritius. In addition, JMS has conducted similar inspections for NOAA, the U.S. Coast Guard [Polar Vessel fleet], the U.S. Geological Survey, the Department of Interior, Schmidt Ocean Institute, and other renowned marine science institutes in the U.S. and internationally.
JMS recognizes that sea-going scientists are the end customers and that the inspections must ensure that the vessels can serve the science missions effectively and safely. The NSF Ship Inspection Program has contributed significantly to the Academic Research Fleet’s continuous improvement of material condition, stellar safety record relative to other segments of the maritime industry, gold-standard science capabilities, and sustained operational readiness. JMS is extremely proud to have been a partner in achieving these goals for over 28 years and looks forward to working with NSF to meet future challenges.
