JMS Provides Support to Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB) for New Research Vessel
Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology’s (HIMB) new research vessel, R/V IMUA, was delivered in September 2023.
Designed by Teknicraft Design and built by All American Marine in Bellingham, WA the 68’ x 25’ aluminum catamaran integrates hydrofoil-assisted hull technology for speed, efficiency, and stability. The vessel supports multi-day offshore oceanographic research missions throughout the Hawaiian islands.

JMS Naval Architects provided naval architecture support and consulting services to HIMB to assist them in acquiring the new research vessel. JMS assisted HIMB in the development of their science mission requirements and matched those requirements to the capabilities and specific oceanographic outfitting. JMS also provided on-site support during construction, trials and delivery.
The vessel was constructed and certified under USCG Subchapter “T” regulations and also maintains designation as an Oceanographic Research Vessel. Powered by a pair of Scania DI16, 082M Tier 3 engines (800 mhp @ 2100 RPM), the vessel achieves a cruise speed of over 22 knots. Its 1800-gallon fuel capacity allows for extended-range research missions, supporting 8 scientists for offshore expeditions and up to 22 students and crew for shorter educational trips.
