Stability Analysis and Modernization of M/V SABINO

17 December 2025

JMS Naval Architects was selected by the Mystic Seaport Museum to conduct a comprehensive stability analysis and regulatory review of the 117 year old wooden passenger vessel, M/V SABINO. This effort followed the vessel’s modernization and restoration, which involved converting its traditional steam boiler propulsion system to a modern diesel-electric system.

The stability analysis adhered to modern standards and was submitted to the U.S. Coast Guard for regulatory review and approval as a Subchapter T vessel. At the same time, all of the modernizations were designed so that the historic character of the vessel was preserved. The vessel now operates under electric power with a 95% reduction in carbon emissions, but maintains the ability to run on the steam engine for special occasions.

JMS developed a precise hydrostatic model using the original vessel lines plan, ensuring the digital twin aligned with historic hydrostatic properties. An on-site Inclining Test was conducted in accordance with ASTM F-1321 to precisely determine the vessel’s new lightship weight and center of gravity and intact stability calculations were prepared and submitted to the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Center (MSC) to validate the vessel complies with current regulations.

Modern engineering ensures the National Historic Landmark, SABINO, remains a safe and functional icon of the Mystic Seaport Museum fleet and continues to serve passengers up and down the Mystic River for years to come.
